Roughly 50 cars have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Cars, walls and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a release.

Law enforcement state they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.

The fluid had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they stated.

Police then discovered many other marked cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.

These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.

Law enforcement say initial examinations indicate the liquid was most likely blood from a person.

"There is still no lead as to its origin; authorities are not yet cognizant of any harm in connection with the event," they stated.

City officials stated they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the public for details.

A high-ranking official said the incident rendered him speechless and had to be solved promptly.

"This act strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on online, recalling the killing of nine victims by a assailant aiming at residents of migrant background in 2020.
