The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Major Partnership Forged Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Discussions Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
